Culture Change

The culture of an organization develops over time and reflects the expectations, demands, and focus of its mission. Changing the culture requires evolution at every level of the organization.

Culture change in the context of transformation requires everyone to consider the possibilities of employment for individuals with disabilities. This includes agency board members, senior leadership, management, direct support professionals, support staff, business and community partners, as well as the individuals receiving services and their families.

Culture change is a journey that will proceed at its own pace with stops, starts, roadblocks, and then, all of a sudden, leaps ahead. Your organization’s journey may not be straightforward or linear – change rarely follows a clear, straight path — and because it will be built on your organization’s mission, vision, and goals, it will follow a process that is unique to your organization.

Use the resources below to jump-start the process of culture change within your organization. If you are also using the Transformation Trail to navigate your journey, you can access these resources as part of Landmark #1 as well. As you progress in your journey, you may find it helpful to loop back and revisit these resources, making them available to all members of your organization, as well as to community partners, board members, individuals and their families as questions and concerns about the process arise.
