Integrating Training Within Industry (TWI) into employment supports is a natural next step in promoting integrated employment for people with disabilities and meeting the goals of Employment First. TWI methods are remarkably similar to those of rehabilitation services, with one important difference: TWI removes disability from the equation. TWI provides a “next step” to the supports offered by Manufacturing Extension Partnerships: the MEP system offers a powerful mechanism for introducing individuals into the manufacturing workforce in positions where their skills are needed while TWI is positioned to provide effective training to develop those skills.
Training Employment Support Specialists and manufacturing firm supervisors in TWI would offer people with disabilities access to consistent training across settings and increased opportunities for real careers in the real workforce. The TWI curriculum trains individuals effectively and consistently. Designed to help workers develop the skills that manufacturing businesses need, TWI’s primary focus is on skill-building and effective instruction. TWI’s straightforward curriculum can be easily implemented in a variety of settings and results in increased employee skills and confidence and improved productivity across the board.
The following documents are offered as an introduction to Training Within Industry (TWI) and provide information about the scope of training venues in which TWI has been implemented. Although TWI has been used primarily in industrial settings, such as Toyota, organizations providing human services have also found that TWI has supported continuous quality improvement, improved staff performance, and enhanced effective service delivery.
